First: What is Wheatgrass??
It
is my favorite way to “eat” my vegetables—by drinking only 1 oz of Wheatgrass a
day.
One ounce of wheatgrass juice has vitamin and mineral
content equal to TWO and a HALF pounds of leafy green vegetables! Thus
the price of a 1oz Wheatgrass shot is WAY cheaper than buying 2 ½ pound of
organic vegetables and so much easier to digest! *Important to note: if you are new to drinking wheatgrass make sure you have access to a bathroom as it will clean you out! It is a great natural diuretic.
Wheatgrass is
derived from juicing the grass of sprouted red hard wheat berries. Wheatgrass
juice is rich in Chlorophyll. Chlorophyll has a molecular structure almost
identical to the hemoglobin molecule of human blood. Chlorophyll in the
wheatgrass juice helps the blood carry Oxygen to all the cells.
Wheatgrass is also a natural source of vitamins and
minerals (a few of which are antioxidants) including:
·
Vitamins A,
E, and B-12
·
Calcium
·
Selenium
·
Magnesium

*Bring your
own cup discount: (.25 off)
1oz $2.25** 2 oz $3.75
**So to put Purple Moon's ridiculously low prices in perspective I will compare it with the most expensive wheatgrass shot in town (White Winds). And they use the exact same wheatgrass!! For every ten 1 oz wheatgrass shots you buy at Purple Moon, using your own cup, you would pay $22.25 and at White Winds for the exact same product, using your own cup, you would pay $30.00!! But you get even crazier savings if you purchase the 2oz shot at Purple Moon in your own cup at $3.75 (37.50 for 10 shots) while at White Winds (10) 2oz shots at $6.00 each, in your own cup will set you back, $60.00!!!! Without any special deals buying your 2oz wheatgrass shots at Purple Moon over White Winds, for 10 days, you will save: $22.50!!!***
***I have to say as an ex-business owner offering a 2oz shot of Organic Wheatgrass for $3.75 makes NO sense financially. There is no way they are making any profit on this item! That being said, customers, take advantage of this amazing price while it lasts!!

#4 (the most expensive single and

White Winds Superfoods
1oz $3.00 2oz $6.00*
*White Wind's prices are so insanely expensive that I feel exploited and feel that I am throwing my money away when I can get the EXACT SAME product elsewhere for $2.25 less PER every 2oz shot!!! Their prices do not reflect their sustainable and environmentally conscious business, in that, they are charging corporate/capitalist profit margins when the average lay person could not afford these prices nor does this seem a sustainable business model. It just feels like a total waste of money and I do not feel good about supporting their inflated profit margins. I.e. a 16 oz veggie/fruit juice is $9.50!! Again whereas a comparable product at Purple Moon will cost you about $6.00 and at Jamba Juice about $6.00...you can do the math! As much as I enjoy White Wind's products I feel gluttonous and that I am literally throwing money away and cannot justify spending $9.50 on a juice or $6.00 on a 2oz wheatgrass; I have a hard time not thinking I could provide organic veggies, for dinner, for a family of four for these prices!!

Market of
Choice serves local and organic wheatgrass from Ronnie at Spectrum Light
Organics. Their wheatgrass is beautiful,
a dark rich green and very much alive!
They use a high power commercial wheatgrass juicer which creates thick
and rich shots. A one once wheatgrass
shot is served with a complementary one once shot of orange juice from
concentrate which is a perfect chaser to wash down the grass taste in your
mouth!

*Whitewind
serves their 1oz wheatgrass shot with a 1oz shot of fresh-squeezed apple juice
while both the apple juice and wheatgrass were tasty the apple juice is not aesthetically
pleasing (see picture above) as well as an unusual pairing for wheatgrass that
is usually accompanied by orange juice or orange wedges (or citrus). Their wheatgrass looked very healthy and
provided a rich green shot. They also
use organic wheatgrass from grown locally from Spectrum Light Organics.
# 3 goes to:
Jamba’s
wheatgrass is not organic and often does not look very healthy. And for some reason their wheatgrass shots
are always watery not rich and dark green like they should be (see above picture). They do offer a cute presentation of a small reusable tray containing your shot of wheatgrass with an orange wedge or a 1oz shot of orange juice from concentrate depending on what location you go to.

*They are the
only ‘drive through’ option in town for a wheatgrass shot. This makes them the most convenient and you
save time on parking. However because
they offer so many menu items, that take quite a bit of time to prepare, allow a 4 to 5 minute wait for each car in front of you or per person at the walk-up
counter.
**Purple Moon's Juice/Smoothie/and Wheatgrass signs are lacking and are not very User Friendly. Their menu boards do not list wheatgrass at all and only have a small mention of the smoothies and juice in the bottom right corner. So among being bad for business their lack of signage makes it difficult to know the true extent of all the products they offer. There are some 8 x 11 smoothie and juice menus in the window but you have to know where to look for them and because of the font and size and text they are difficult to read. So until they fix their smoothie/juice signs, as a customer, you must request the Juice menu or know what they offer and order it 'off the menu.' The staff at Purple Moon, are for the most part, knowledgeable about the products they serve. They also have a handout of the nutritional benefits of wheatgrass if you ask for it.

**Because Mkt
of Choice has bakers and baristas fill in at the espresso/wheatgrass counter
the service is usually lacking in knowledge.
There have been times where I have ordered a wheatgrass shot here and
got blank stares and there was one time where the barista did not know how to
use the wheatgrass machine. I got my
shot at a slow time for them today Sunday morning at 9:30 AM. So if go at a busy time (weekday mornings and
afternoons) expect to wait at least 12 to 15 minutes for your wheatgrass
shot. Today a barista made my wheatgrass
shot and although she did not know the health benefits of wheatgrass or where
they get their wheatgrass from she knew how to use the machine and juiced me a
lovely shot within a reasonable time frame—7 minutes. *However because one must find parking and
walk into the store you should probably add 4 minutes to your expected time
frame of start to finish getting your wheatgrass shot—making it 11 minutes
total and more if they are busy.

*Due to their downtown location parking is hit or miss.
Plan to spend 4 to 5 minutes looking for parking or circling the block.
**Their
staff seems fairly knowledgeable about the nutritional content and health
benefits of their drinks. However they
did not have an information sheet to provide customers with information on
wheatgrass. Also when I ordered my wheatgrass shot their machine had to be cleaned due to having carrot pulp in it. This added quite a bit of unnecessary time and due to their setup seems like it would be a regular occurrence. All the other venues featured, on this wheatgrass blog post, have wheatgrass machines that are solely for wheatgrass eliminating unnecessary wait time.

*Total time: 7 min (1 min parking....parking is always easy and available)
*While Jamba Juice is quick and offers friendly customer service their employees are incredibly uniformed, to the point today, that the cashier gave me false information!! I asked if their wheatgrass was organic and the cashier replied "Yes and all of our fruits and veggies for our juicing are organic." I stared blankly at the menu and asked her to please show me where it said their products are organic. She gave a vague response and said it doesn't list their organic status on the menu but that it states it on their invoices. I asked to see these invoices as it has been my understanding that none of Jamba's products are organic or local and that they use a Sysco type food distributor (Food Services of America). The cashier struggled to find anything that documented that their products were organic. After 6 minutes of searching she came to the conclusion that the only products that are organic are the carrots and spinach which are both used for juicing!! NOTHING else was organic! So I checked in with her at the end, "So your wheatgrass is NOT organic?" To which she confirmed "Our wheatgrass is not organic." Beyond wanting to know what I am paying for as a customer or wanting to have knowledge of the quality of a product I am buying I was most concerned if someone with an autoimmune disorder ordered wheatgrass from Jamba under the FALSE pretenses that it was organic this could send them to the hospital or into a horrible remission of symptoms! It is an important lesson to investigate and ask questions however this pisses me off. I want my cashiers and help to be INFORMED. I feel like that is part of what I am paying them for and I believe this issues is the business owner's responsibility. This is the 3rd time I have asked a cashier a question about what is in their product and not only did they give incorrect information they were argumentative. Argh. Jamba does provide brochures regarding the nutritional content of all of their products however their staff often is not knowledgeable about their products when you inquire.
